Smoking, as everyone knows, is a bad addiction that will leads to many diseases later on. Smoking can also be a nuisance to the other. So how bad is smoking actually?
Firstly, smoking will lead to life threatening diseases. For example, smoking lead to the number one killer, lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in america and have more than 150,000 death annually. 87% of smokers gets lung cancer. Smoking will eventually leads to lung diseases even if not lung cancer. And many time, smokers does not live as long as non-smoker. Also, they are unable to live a healthy life like does who don’t smoke.
In addition, smoking endangers the health of family and close friends. When smokers smoke, the second hand smoke will be breathe in by family and close friends. Prolong breathing in of second hand smoke will also ultimately cause lung cancer. In fact, breathing in second hand smoke will have a higher chance of weakening the lungs more than those who smoke. It is hence a very inconsiderate act and selfish action. Would you want to kill your close ones just to fulfill your addiction?
Lastly, smoking is very costly. The cost of a packet of cigarette is around $11, and an average smoker will spend around $44 on cigarette a month, given that he only smoke a packet a week. However, many addicted smokers smoke as much as 2 packet a day, which is $660 a month, $8030 a year. This is a whooping eight thousand dollars! Instead, those money could be used to fund education, buy needed items like laptops, or even go oversea or donate the money to charity. Smoking is a waste of precious money and should be avoided.
In conclusion, smoking not only harms the smoker itself, it also harm people around them. This itself is very bad. While we still have many smokers around, many are seeing the consequences seriously and is making an effort to quit smoking. And that is something we should appluad for, because they are showing everyone that smoking is bad.
