“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.”
Martha Graham
Okay, before I start my little post on DPA, let’s talk about my MYE first.
I pretty much flunked everything no matter how prepared I was. I will improve by Prelim, I promise. So teachers, please don’t give up on me. You know I have a dream and I must make it.
And now, DPA
Honestly, I admit that although I have confidence to do well in O levels, and getting single digit L1R4, but the requirement for biomedical science course in Singapore Poly needs Chemistry in the R4. How am I suppose to get a good score with chemistry? I barely passed last year and you need me to get a B3 by O levels? The cut off point is 8 for L1R4. Given that both my maths get A1, plus humanities A1, I have 3 points for 3 subjects already. This meant I only have 5 more points for both English and chemistry, which I am not good in. Even though I am sure to get 1 bonus point, but who knows if the batch cut off point will drop. It is a very competitive course, with such low cut off point. Only with 4 distinction plus 1 decent grade or better will secure you a place in it. If not, you can say goodbye to it.
So this is why I am thinking of DPA, to secure me a place to the course I liked most. Before knowing biomedical science, I always aim to go to Nanyang JC because of its good reputation and being near my house. And I am mentally prepared to mug for two whole years with subjects that I hate very much(Physics, English). And also, I believe that giving me a GPA 4.0 and AAA/A grade, I believe that GPA 4.0 is easier. I will never get an A grade for English, unless by extremely good luck. My grammar is rubbish(thanks to me not listening in primary school). And how do you expect me to get both A’s for Chemistry and Physics, when I am barely understanding now? From occasional Mr Ng’s talk on JC physics, I knew for sure I will die in there. Although JC is suppose to help their graduate move on to university, if I enter JC I probably cannot get into local university to fulfil my dreams.
Thus, I’ve decided to go to Singapore Poly to study Biomedical Science, but the obstacle I have to face is my result.
Since I know what I want and I knew that biomedical is my passion(since it’s about human), should I go for DPA? But my CCA records are not fantastic. Even though I am from red cross, I don’t think it will be a great advantage to me, since I am just a member of the cca. My CIP hours are decent yet useless, with most of them picking rubbish or attending events. I don’t have any achievements too, but honestly, how to get achievements in this field when we’re 16? Maybe some kiasu people knows ways to do that, but I never heard of any competition related to it.
Maybe, if CCA is not very important, I am very sure I can convince the interviewers on my passion. Given my confidence level(I don’t go shy like girls in front of examiners) and I talk with power(because I probably prepared long time ago), I should be able to get them to accept me. But before the interview I have to write an essay, which I am super weak in. I cannot persuade people with essay, speech yes but writing…
I have to think about it. I am sure if I can make it to the interview, and if cca is not an important factor, I will be able to get into the course 90%. I really like to study medical things, on diseases and things related. I don’t like to see people suffer. I believe that I can help many people with my knowledge. I like medical stuff and things related to diseases since I was 9 years old. I know tons on asthma, diabetes and simple conditions when I was 11 years old. Who can beat my passion? And it’s genuine passion, not fake passion forced by society.
I’m still thinking. Let’s see what I get for MYE before deciding. And I’m attending a portfolio workshop tomorrow. Maybe I will gain something from it to improve my chance of succeeding?
