Thinking of future

So like most 19 years old that are graduating, I am also thinking about my future. I finished writing my personal statement in 2 hours yesterday and sent to the agent. Wasn’t as difficult as I thought it will be. Like everything just flows once you have an idea.

I have been thinking about what I can do after my University. Should I go with what I like, which is take a PhD, just risk have unstable future? If I take a PhD, my career pretty much depends whether I get grants or not. Also, god knows when will I graduate from it. While some people say you can finish in 3 to 4 years, it is not uncommon to see people finishing after 8 to 10 years. I don’t have so much time to do a PhD. I want it fast and good.

Or maybe, if I do qualify for a PhD, I probably would have scored very well. Then, should I go with what my family wants and apply for medical school? But I hate the stress, the long working hours, the shits that junior doctors have to go through, and the ridiculous school fees. But, the job is stable, and unless I kill someone accidentally I doubt I will ever be out of job.

Maybe it is too early to think so far, but because I am applying for a degree that finishes in 2 years, I have to plan ahead because should I want to apply for anything, I have to start right after I finish my first year in university.

The good thing about PhD is that while doing I can get a stipend, and don’t have to pay school fees. I cannot imagine myself paying another 4 years for medical school and start working with a load of debt and doing things I won’t even enjoy.

I love lab and I know it, but everyone knows the industry isn’t very promising.

The most annoying thing is not knowing where to go. It is when you know where you want to go, but you cannot see the destination.

Simply not enough recognition are given to scientists. Even some medical doctors don’t really respect scientists and researchers and don’t address them with Dr despite them having PhD. Not all, but some of them. I’ve been reading a lot of forums for insights and read all these 🙁 Not very encouraging. But PhD are the real doctors, ‘doctor’ come from a latin word which meant ‘teach’. PhDs are the ones who teach, and they hold the highest university qualification.

One website says ‘PhD advances knowledge, whereas MD merely applies existing knowledge’. Can we have more respect and recognition for all those PhD we have out there already?
