This was a last minute addition to our Golden Circle Tour. The tour guide mentioned it and if we want to go for it, there is an additional ticket price and he’ll drop us at the place. Since we’re in Iceland, might as well go for it. Especially because I’ll probably never return to the country again (it’s too far and expensive馃槶)
The cost for the show is 4,900 ISK.聽Expensive but it’s a once in a lifetime experience 馃捀馃捀聽That’s like 拢30+. I don’t even want to convert to SGD because my poor heart will shatter…
We had about 30 minutes before the show starts so we grabbed our lunch at the little cafe at the venue. I got the Hurry Curry Soup and holy god it’s damn good. It tasted almost like Asian curry, minus the spiciness. It cost me 1,690 ISK but it comes with cod and tiny shrimps so I convinced myself it’s worth the premium price (there’s seafood!). Comes with free flow bread too!
That’s the average price of Icelandic food though. It’s just extremely expensive if we convert it into SGD.
We went to the show after our lunch. Only 7 people attended that session. It was really interesting and the presenter was really entertaining. He talked about how his grandfather or great-grandfather survived the Katla explosion in 1918, and how he decided to start the Lava show. We also learnt about the volcanoes in Iceland. This is also where I learnt that Iceland has many active volcanoes.
Why is Iceland called Iceland and not Fireland when they had so many active volcanoes?
He also told us that the residents of Iceland had a card in their house which has the steps to do when they receive an explosion warning. I thought that was quite cool and scary at the same time. He mentioned that Katla can explode anytime because it was way overdue for an explosion. All I could think of is that it won’t explode while we’re here, because I have absolutely no idea what to do if that happens.
The main attraction of the show is seeing聽real聽lava flowing down. Holy shit when the lava flows down, it was splattering and the surrounding area was damn hot even though we’re quite a distance away. Must be fucking painful to die by lava.
Got a little stone made from lava(?) as a souvenir before we left. Really an interesting show, but the price tag though… The presenter told us they only started a few months ago, so I guess I’m the first few to visit? It’s worth seeing lava at least once. Where else can you get so close to lava聽without the dangers?
